An art-loving motorcyclist with a desire to draw his own number plates has faced court.

Daniel Edward Hall was caught on a bike with obviously fake registration that had been constructed out of a small piece of paper with texta-drawn letters and numbers.

Not surprisingly eagle-eyed cops were awake to his road rule rogue ruse and pulled him over, finding out he didn’t have a bike licence and only ever had held a learner’s car permit.

The 38-year-old unemployed labourer pleaded guilty to a series of driving-related charges at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

The court heard on June 2 last year a police patrol noticed a backfiring bike splutter past them in Skye Rd, Frankston.

They did a U-turn and caught up with the rider, and began to check his details.

But it didn’t take them long to figure out something was amiss when they saw the number plate consisted of a small piece of paper with letters and numbers drawn on with a texta.

And what was written didn’t even match the type of bike they were on.

Hall told officers he needed to ride the bike because he thought if it was left at his property it would be stolen, so needed to “get it out of the house”.

Four months later he was pulled over while riding again, this time in Carrum Downs.

This time his bike had proper plates, but they didn’t match that bike.

Hall’s defence lawyer said his client was genuinely fearful the motorbike would be stolen as he had been the victim of a theft from that location before.

He said he was remorseful, he wasn’t riding dangerously or under the influence of anything, and he was co-operative with police.

He said the father of two wanted to apply for a licence but had been stalled by Covid lockdowns, and was hoping to get back into work once things picked up on the construction front.

Magistrate Richard Pithouse convicted Hall, fined him $1000 and banned him from applying for a licence for 12 months.
