Dandenong’s tallest building to house global hotel brand

An award-winning hotel and apartment operator will open its second complex in Australia in what will be — at 67 metres — Dandenong’s tallest building, with construction starting on the $62 million project.

The world’s largest serviced apartment operator will open its second Australian complex as part of Dandenong’s tallest building.

Construction has started on the $62 million Spectra Dandenong, with the Thomas St building to include 98 short-stay rooms and 56 residential apartments.

Award-winning Singaporean hotel and apartment operator Oakwood has been announced today as the operator of the building’s accommodation services.

The 67-metre tall building will have a total 15,521sq m of floor space — which will include restaurant, cafe and offices, with a medical centre earmarked for the first floor — and is expected to bring 150 jobs to the area.

Martyn Barnes, managing director of the building’s developer Barnes Capital, said the project would “redefine the way we work, live and play” in Dandenong “for a long time to come”.

“We really do believe in the community and we think Dandenong is a centre for business activity,” Mr Barnes said.

“(The project) is definitely gaining momentum and we have had great feedback so far.”

Asia Pacific Oakwood managing director Dean Schreiber said central Dandenong’s perfect location gave “new meaning to work life balance”.

“We are excited to shift the paradigm for younger and savvy residents in search for the cosmopolitan lifestyle,” Mr Schreiber said.

Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades said the apartments would be great for the city.

“We are pleased to have this development and with the recent reduction of parking fees in the CBD we are hoping this will encourage more people to live and shop in Dandenong,” Cr Blades said.

“We are being proactive and we believe this development will keep up a lot of activity in Dandenong.”

The building, at 219-221 Thomas St, is expected to be completed in October next year.
