A Dandenong woman who was kidnapped at the age of 12 has been jailed after she randomly attacked multiple people including a security guard and a police officer.
Kerry Adams, 36, pleaded guilty at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday to charges including theft and assault.
The court heard Adams’ violent tirade spanned more than 22 months from January 2020 to November 2021.
In November last year, Adams stole from Dandy Fashion and was confronted by a woman asking her to return the items.
Adams kicked the woman multiple times in the leg and punched her in the jaw and forehead.
The woman fell to the ground and Adams pulled her hair and punched her in the back.
The woman fell unconscious and Adams fled the scene.
She was later arrested where she kicked a senior constable two times in the face after she refused to get in the police van.
On two other occasions, Adams kicked a Melbourne Custody Centre officer and bit a security guard at Chemist Warehouse in Dandenong.
She also attacked a random woman in Thomas St, dragging her by the hair and kicking her twice in the head.
Adams’ lawyer Anthony Maselli said the woman had a “traumatic upbringing” as she was kidnapped at the age of 12 and held captive for 14 days.
Mr Maselli said Adams fell pregnant at 15, had an abortion and faced “extreme bullying” at school due to her Indigenous heritage.
He also said she was diagnosed with epilepsy and suffered from untreated mental health conditions that were “exacerbated by her drinking”.
Magistrate Jacinta Studham said Adams had to address her alcohol issues as her victims were innocent members of the community.
“I accept what happened to you when you were 12 years of age would have no doubt shaped the person you currently are,” she said.
“You are not a lost cause.
“You are a mother of six children, you have a very proud Indigenous background and that is something you need to cling onto.”
Adams was sentenced to 12 months in prison with a non-parole period of six months.
