A woman accused of smashing a glass coffee table over her lover as he lay sleeping in their bed was on bail at the time for allegedly hitting him with a walking stick.

Kimberly Traeger allegedly launched her fury on her now former boyfriend – who is also her neighbour – because she was upset about the state of their relationship.

The 26-year-old student appeared by video link at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Thursday to apply for bail on charges of unlawful assault and criminal damage.

The alleged victim also has his own unit in the same block of Dandenong flats but they had been sharing Ms Traeger’s home over the past few months.

Remand Liaison Officer Sergeant Chris Marlow told the court the man was asleep in the early hours of August 27 when Ms Traeger allegedly woke him up by hitting him with a small table.

He then got up to try and get away, but she cornered him and then allegedly pushed him into a fridge, kicking and punched him as he fell to the ground.

Although the glass table was completely destroyed, the man only received minor arm injuries in the alleged attack.

Police came and arrested her and she was taken into custody.

Sgt Marlow said Ms Traeger was on bail at the time for an alleged altercation in July.

He said in that incident she is accused of attacking her partner with his own walking stick, smashing a window with a frying pan and slashing the man’s clothes.

Ms Traeger’s lawyer told the court there were concerns over the alleged victim’s evidence as he had not made a formal statement to police.

She said Ms Traeger admitted criminal damage charges but denied the assaults, saying she was the victim in the July incident and had to be taken to hospital for her physical injuries.

She said the Box Hill TAFE veterinary student had stable accommodation, had no criminal priors and the morning she had spent in custody was incredibly distressing for her.

Magistrate Suzette Dootjes said delay was a significant factor as any contested hearing would not be held until next year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

She said if she was found guilty, any potential jail sentence would likely not be as long as the time she would have had already spent on remand.

She said Ms Traeger will be allowed to continue to live at her Dandenong home, but must not go within 10m of the alleged victim or attend his unit.

She was bailed to face court again on January 29.
