THERE are more than 200 wanted criminals roaming the streets of Greater Dandenong.
And the region’s top cop says many of them are reoffending.
Leader has joined forces with the police to reveal 10 of the municipality’s most wanted.
From drugs and assault charges to traffic offenders and court avoiders — Greater Dandenong local area commander Inspector Mark Langhorn said many of these people had been given a chance and turned their back on the justice system.
“When we talk about our wanted people — which can fluctuate from 100 to 300 people at any one time — we focus on offenders who haven’t showed up at court and warrants have been issued for their arrest,” Insp Langhorn said.
“Generally these people have been given bail and they’ve failed to turn up to court … they are avoiding justice and they are often committing further offences.
“We want to get these people off the streets and have a team dedicated to tracking down our higher risk absconders.”
DANDENONG’S TOP 10 MOST WANTED
Of the 10 people we call on the public to help locate, at least two have been linked to violent behaviour: Damien Wagner, 36, wanted for intentionally causing injury; and Sujeevan Thavaraja, who assaulted a police officer.
Four are accused of breaching a community corrections order, meaning they have faced court and are avoiding punishment.
Insp Langhorn said the public could play an integral role in finding wanted persons.
Neighbourhood Watch Greater Dandenong president Dawn Vernon said the public should be aware that they could provide vital information through Crime Stoppers.
She said anyone who wanted information on how to help police or give information about a crime could attend a Neighbourhood Watch Forum at O’Donoghue Hall, 18 Buckley St, Noble Park, from 7.30pm on September 20 or phone 0407 325 030.
Anyone with information on a wanted person should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
