They’re saying they want action on the issue and we strongly agree with them,” she said.
“We have a school in the middle of two intersections and a crossing is desperately needed.
“Heatherton Rd is extremely busy all the time.”
The council will hold a meeting with government officials to highlight the issue.
Emerson Principal John Mooney said he was rapt the council was speaking up for the school.
“Emerson School is appreciative and thanks all councillors for their wonderful support,” he said.
“We are most concerned about protecting the safety of students and all community members.
“We know that all authorities will work together to find a positive outcome as soon as possible.”
The Leader reported earlier this month that VicRoads had said no to a school crossing despite warnings from the police, anxious parents and Mr Mooney that a child could be killed.
In a letter circulated to education and council officials supporting calls for the crossing, Dandenong acting Inspector Graeme Stanley said police had received numerous complaints from parents and motorists involving “risk taking by students attempting to cross this road”.
“This situation is now critical and with the increase in school population it will only develop safety issues,” he wrote in January.
