Almost 50 angry neighbours in Cranbourne South would’ve been left in dark on the day of the AFL Grand Final due to an energy company’s planned works.
Neighbour Liz Cayley — one of dozens who received a notice from United Energy outlining works were taking place between 8am and 4.30pm on September 28 — said she was furious works were planned on “Australia’s biggest sporting event of the year”.

“It’s just ridiculous they planned these works on this important day and affect our quiet and tight-knit community like this,” Ms Cayley said.
The Leader contacted United Energy early this morning, and received a response from the company within minutes confirming the distributor had decided yesterday to cancel the works.
But Liz Cayley, one of the neighbours who would have been affected, said the first she had heard about the works being cancelled was through the Leader.
“We still haven’t received a notification to confirm the works have been cancelled and we spoke to the company this morning — I hope we get the official confirmation soon,” Ms Cayley said.
She said almost 50 neighbours had been affected and she was furious at the way the company had handled their complaints about works.
“The customer service hotline is in the Philippines and they had no idea about the scheduled works and this makes it all the more frustrating,” she said.

Ms Cayley said the community was also angered by other power disruptions in recent weeks.
“We have had at least four full days of no power. We hope United Energy rethink their outages and don’t inconvenience people on important family days such as public holidays.”
A United Energy spokeswoman said the company would be informing customers of the decision to cancel works directly.
