The partner of the motorcyclist killed in an alleged hit and run in Cranbourne North said telling her five-year-old daughter that “dad” wasn’t coming home was the most difficult experience of her life.

Tributes have since poured in for Matt Weegink, the 26-year-old killed at a Cranbourne intersection shortly before 2am Thursday, when the motorbike he was riding and a silver Holden Commodore collided.

“Watching her eyes well and lip quiver before she balled her eyes out was the most heart-aching thing I’ve had to do,” partner Morgan Parker said.

Police said they believe the driver got out of his car in the early hours of Thursday and picked up “vehicle parts” before driving off west on Thompsons Road.

Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit arrested a Toora man, 30, at Frankston Train Station on Thursday afternoon.

Ms Parker said the bond her daughter shared with Mr Weegink was something of beauty.

“She and Matt adored one another like nothing I’ve ever seen before,” she said.

Ms Parker said she wanted everyone to know Mr Weegink had “a heart of gold”.

He was a free spirit, she said, who “loved his family and friends more than anything.”

Mate Brodie Oakley has known Mr Weegink since they were at Lyndhurst Secondary College together.

The 26-year-old said Mr Weegink “loved his motorbikes,” a passion they shared.

Witnesses reportedly rushed to help Mr Weegink but he died at the scene.

Thompsons Rd was closed to eastbound traffic for about 12 hours before it reopened about 2pm Thursday.

Close friend Alicia Hill said she had spoken to Mr Weegink on the phone as recently as Wednesday night.

“He was the most down-to-earth bloke,” Mr Oakley said.

“He was someone you could really trust.

“It hasn’t sunk in.”

On her Facebook page, she wrote: “I can’t believe the news I woke up to this morning. I was only speaking to you to last night. Absolutely devastated.”

“Rest In Peace … until we meet again.”

Another friend, Tayla-Jade McEwan, wrote: “So many broken hearts today, you were such a good bloke with such a sweet heart. You will be so missed.”
