A Cranbourne canine-hating thug who bashed and threatened to kill his girlfriend and attacked her dog has been sentenced.
Jayson Weegink was given six months behind bars for the vicious assault he inflicted on his partner at her home in Narre Warren South.
The 28-year-old ice addict also threw her dog around a room during the outburst of abuse and violence.
He was sentenced at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to assaults, threats to kill and criminal damage.
The court heard Weegink was at his girlfriend’s house on on July 14 when he started an argument and punched her in the face.
He then picked up her dog and threw the animal around the room, saying he was going to stab it with a knife.
When the woman tried to rescue her pet he choked her while yelling he was going to kill her by smashing her head on the ground “until it cracks”.
She managed to escape and run away to alert a neighbour as Weegink rode off on his motorbike.
He was able to avoid being caught until a few days later when officers found him at his parents’ Cranbourne North home.
Weegink’s defence lawyer said he had no priors for violence and disputed some of the details surrounding the incident, but wanted to resolve the issue now to save the victim having to attend a hearing.
She said the mechanic had so far served 50 days in custody, and had drug and mental health issues that would benefit from treatment and supervision on a community corrections order.
Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said the level of anger and threats in his “significant violent” offending was high.
“You punched the victim to the face, you threw a plate at her, you threw her dog around the house,” Ms O’Donnell said.
“You threatened to smash her head in, you grabbed her by the throat.
“Fifty days (time served) is not sufficient, you need further prison time.”
She said he was being given a substantial discount for pleading guilty and sparing the victim having to attend court, and he had no history of violence, otherwise the sentence would be longer.
Weegink was jailed for six months, minus 50 days he has already served.
He was sent for a community corrections assessment and if found suitable he will serve an 18-month order upon release.
