Congested intersection finally on the agenda for the Level Crossing Removal Project

It’s been labelled one of the most dangerous level crossings on the Pakenham line. But not everyone thinks its removal will solve traffic congestion.

Construction on the level crossing removal at Narre Warren station is expected to start later this year, but not everyone is a fan of the project.

While Webb St, which runs past the station, has about 13,200 vehicles passing through its level crossing daily, the projects announcement on Facebook attracted mixed opinions.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said getting rid of the Webb St crossing — there are a further 10 slated for removal on the Pakenham line — was vital to improving motorist safety.

“This is one of the most dangerous and congested level crossings on the Pakenham line and we’re getting rid of it for good to boost safety and ease congestion,” Ms Allan said.

But not everyone using the intersections believed it was dangerous.

“The word dangerous is thrown liberally around these stupid skyrail constructions,” Teresa Kemp said on social media.

“Congested, yes. Dangerous, no. But by scaring the punters, Comrade Dan gets free rein. No business plan. No environmental impact statement. No traffic management plan. None. Nada. Nil.”

There were also some doubts the upgrade would ease traffic congestion on Webb St.

“Most of the time traffic does not move much anyway, thanks to the nearby highway, and other factors not related to the crossing,” Narre Warren resident James Sinclair said.

But Andrew Marshal was more supportive of the project.

“About time, so much better, and it will free up traffic. Hopefully they will fix the problems with flooding of the car park too,’’ he said.

Narre Warren North state Labor Luke Donnellan said: “I know how important the removal of this level crossing is to our community and now everyone has the opportunity to share their thoughts and help shape the final design before construction starts,” he said.
