Cockatoo dies from shocking injuries after being caught in kite string

A cockatoo was left dangling upside down 20m from the ground in a Rosebud gum tree after becoming tangled in kite string. The gruesome incident promoted one bird lover to make a generous offer.

Despite the best efforts of arborist Sean Lynch, this cockatoo didn’t make it.

A desperate bid to save a cockatoo caught in kite string has inspired a Mornington Peninsula arborist to offer his services for free.

The bird was spotted hanging upside down high up in a large gum tree near a Rosebud oval on Saturday.

Tree lopper Sean Lynch heard about the bird’s predicament and rushed to help.

“It was pretty windy but I’m a tree climber. I got up there as quickly as I could and found the bird completely wrapped up in sting from a kite,” Mr Lynch said.

“It was in a bad way. It was hanging upside down and its legs were almost snapped through by the string. By the time I got there it was a twisted bloody mess.”

Mr Lynch freed the bird, wrapped it in a jumper and brought it to the ground.

“I took it to the vet but unfortunately it couldn’t be saved. It was in such bad shape it had to be euthanised,” he said

The qualified arborist said the incident had shocked and upset him.

“I love wildlife. I hate the thought of any animal suffering,” he said.

Mr Lynch said the popularity of kites had soared during lockdown.

“The oval near (Mornington Peninsula Shire) council offices in Rosebud is really popular with people flying kites.

“I don’t think they realise how much damage can be done if one gets way from them.”

The Rosebud man has since decided to offer a free service to Mornington Peninsula kite flyers.

“If your kite gets stuck up a tree, don’t just walk away and leave it there. Call me. I’ll come and get it down for you.”

Sean Lynch can be contacted through his business SJL Property Services or on 0422 629 098.
