A tired thief was found asleep by PSOs in Bentleigh train station car park in a nicked motor stacked with stolen gear, a court has heard.

Christopher James Dike had nodded off behind the wheel in the stolen Mazda SUV after coming down from taking 1-4 Bute earlier the same day.

The Pakenham unemployed 30-year-old pleaded guilty to a series of theft-related charges at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The court heard PSOs were patrolling the Bentleigh area when they noticed a driver slumped behind the wheel of a vehicle parked in the railway car park.

When they did a check on the Mazda it came back stolen, having been nicked from a home in Pakenham at around 4.30am that morning.

Inside was a smorgasbord of stolen goods including passports, iPads, phones, cameras, jewellery, clothing, wallets and bank cards taken from a variety of cars and homes in the Narre Warren and Officer areas.

Also during the same day the same car was involved in a hit and run in Narre Warren.

When interviewed by police Dike said he was the passenger in the car when it sideswiped the other vehicle, but admitted he had driven it from Cheltenham to Bentleigh.

He said the items found in the car were already there when he got into it and he had pulled over to have a sleep after taking 1-4 Bute.

In 2010 Dike, who was 19 at the time, was jailed for more than five years after he gatecrashed a Bentleigh East party and slashed a man’s face with a meat cleaver.

He admitted being high on LSD when he attacked the 25-year-old with the large bladed weapon which left the victim with nerve damage and unable to smile properly.

His defence lawyer said Dike may have genetic mental health issues and requested time for a psychiatric report to be compiled.

He said his client had written a letter to the court that he wished to be considered before any penalty was handed down.

Magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg remanded Dike in custody for further plea and sentence on July 19.
