Hundreds have raced to be the first to experience a fresh food market bigger than the MCG at Chadstone Shopping Centre, with some shoppers queueing for more than an hour.
The 26,500 sqm Market Pavilion precinct features more than 50 new food retailers including butchers, bakers, florists, fishmongers, and delectable meal offerings including a bagel and champagne bar.
The gourmet space — which was modelled on European food markets — attracted hundreds of shoppers within the first hour of opening on Thursday morning.
Shopper Si Lim said she queued for an hour to be one of the first to shop in the new precinct.
“I want to try some of the new food options, especially the new chocolate and sweet shops,” she said.
“The space looks very exciting for foodies.”
A dining laneway, with options for dine in and takeaway meals, leads into the $485m food precinct.
The shopping centre previously announced the space would incorporate AI technology to generate recipes for food buyers purchase at the market.
There will also be “kerbside collection bays’’ to collect groceries, places to leave trolleys full of food for staff to store in dedicated fridges while you shop elsewhere and a “Market Kitchen’’ with cooking displays.
The market will also have a two-hour express ‘Fresh Food Parking’ option, so foodies don’t get stuck in Chadstone’s vast parking lot.
