Casey Council’s Narre Warren civic centre will be demolished

CASEY Council will demolish its old civic centre and library but the future of the site remains unclear.

CASEY Council will demolish its old civic centre and library but the future of the site remains unclear.

The council is unlikely to sell the site, saying it would “explore options which will further enhance the precinct” while it looked at options for the site, which is sandwiched between Bunjil place and Westfield Fountain Gate.

In the short term, part of the cleared land will be used for parking.

The council will move to Bunjil Place, its new $125 million development, in October.

Casey council’s $125 million arts precinct Bunjil Place, is due to open with a weekend of festivities

City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said the 1970s-era buildings were decades old and in poor condition.

“Both the civic centre and library buildings have outlived their usefulness — it’s simply not practical or economically viable to invest a significant amount of ratepayers’ money to bring them up to a standard suitable for any tenant,” he said.

“It is our preference for the site to remain in council hands.

“We are undertaking the planning work required to understand council and community requirements for this area.”

Cr Aziz said the council wanted the Narre Warren-Fountain Gate precinct to become a “CBD of the south-east” and the land could play a role in that.

He said the community could offer suggestions about what to do with the site during the planning process.

Demolition will start early next year.

The Bunjil Place civic and arts centre will open on October 28.
