A CARRUM DOWNS drunk wasted on eight vodkas nearly blinded a stranger after she wrongly accused him of stealing her handbag.
She was on a bender in Mornington with her mate when she misplaced her bag while urinating in a laneway.
In her highly-intoxicated state she falsely believed the victim had taken it and went after him, attacking his face and leaving him with a serious eye injury.
OFF DUTY COP SAVES MAN FROM BURNING HOUSE
Frankston Magistrates’ Court yesterday heard 27-year-old single mother Jenna Grose and her plastered pal had been out on the night of October 27 last year.
At around 3am the drunk duo left a Mornington bar and went to get some food; when they tried to re-enter afterwards they were refused entry and went into a nearby laneway.
She put her handbag down and, in her confused condition, wrongly believed one of a group of passing males had picked it up.
She chased after the man, grabbed him, ripping his T-shirt and hitting him in the face before he struggled and managed to get away.
A passing police patrol arrested her and took her back to the station.
All the time the handbag had been left in the laneway, and her friend had in fact picked it up.
The victim had to go to the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and even now has ongoing treatment for lacerations to his eye.
The court heard he is considered a civil claim against her for damages.
Her defence lawyer said she had written a letter of apology to the victim and was remorseful.
Magistrate Ross Betts said he was seriously considering jailing Grose, and it was only her excellent references, letter of apology and family responsibility that had kept her out of prison.
“A young mother out having eight vodkas, or more, (is a concern),” Mr Betts said.
“Your conduct here may have caused permanent loss of vision to your victim.”
Grose was placed on a two-year community corrections order, must do 250 hours of unpaid work and undertake alcohol and mental health counselling.
