Brett Sherry: Dandenong man bailed for birth of baby after drugs, firearm, taser allegedly found in unit

A Magistrate has told an alleged Dandenong crim he should name his soon-to-be-born baby ‘Lucky’ after he was bailed to support his heavily pregnant girlfriend. But the man was warned he’ll be locked up if he steps out of line.

A Dandenong man who allegedly told police he’d take “any” drug he could get his hands on has been bailed for the birth of his baby.

But Magistrate Costas Kilias warned Brett Sherry he’d be arrested if he broke strict bail conditions set at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

It comes after the daily drug abuser was allegedly found with machetes, ammunition, tasers and a disassembled double barrel shot gun inside his Dandenong unit on September 22.

Police also allegedly uncovered a stack of drugs including Viagra, MDMA, ice, ritalin and butanol as well as a number of mobile phones.

Sherry, who was living with his heavily pregnant girlfriend, allegedly told police he’d bought the ammunition and tasers off Wish.com and that he was going to make a necklace out of the ammunition.

He allegedly told officers he used ice but would take “any” drug he could get his hands on.

The court was told Sherry and his girlfriend were also allegedly found with knuckledusters, butanol and a hunting knife at a Longwarry petrol station on April 29.

Sherry’s lawyer said his client had been suffering anxiety after his girlfriend and her unborn baby were each recently diagnosed with a medical condition.

“He’s certainly motivated to provide ongoing support to her and be able to be present for the birth of his child,” the defence said.

Mr Kilias noted Sherry’s partner was now 36 weeks pregnant and that she and the unborn child needed support due to their medical conditions.

He also noted Sherry’s stable residence and job opportunity at his father’s workplace.

“There’s almost no doubt if (Sherry) puts a step wrong he’ll end up in jail,” Mr Kilias said.

“I hate being made a fool of, can you read between the lines Mr Sherry?

“I’m going to give him bail and he’s going to call this kid ‘Lucky’.”

Sherry faces charges including possess methamphetamine and was bailed on the condition he must not use drugs and must stay at his home between 9pm and 6am unless in the company of his partner if she is in labour.

He will return to court on November 18.
