HUNDREDS of people turned out in Dandenong to shout a loud ‘no to family violence’.
The Walk Against Family Violence is now in its sixth year and Greater Dandenong Council Chief Executive John Bennie said the aim was to raise awareness and promote relationships based on respect and equality between women and men.
“Family Violence is a significant issue here in Greater Dandenong but it is one that affects people right across Australia,” he said.
Members of the public, community groups, council representatives and the police all joined the walk.
Victoria Police Superintendent Paul Hollowood and Survivor Advocate Jen Harwood spoke at the march.
“Domestic violence creeps up. It’s an erosion of boundaries,” Ms Harwood said.
“Over a period of time it forces you to hand power over to someone else because they need to feel power.”
“We need to address family violence now in the hope our children close the loop.”
“We need people to come out and normalise it, we need men to call it out and we need a system that will support women to come out.”
