Betty’s Burgers has finally opened on the Mornington Peninsula after building delays and red tape put plans on hold for four months.

The Main Street, Mornington venue welcomed friends and family to a soft launch on Wednesday night ahead of opening to the public on Thursday.

Designed to reflect a 1950s beach vibe, the restaurant can seat 120 and manager Marcus McQuilkin said unlike other burger joints Betty encouraged guests to dine in.

“We want pople to embrace the restaurant experience again,” Mr McQuilkin said.

Bettys is also licensed and serves its own beer – brewed by Pirate Life in Port Adelaide, South Australia – and wine.

The menu offers a range of burgers from the Classic Betty with house made special sauce and in a nod to Betty’s home town, the Noosa Classic Surf which features fried prawns with a beef patty and all the trimmings.

There is also a mushroom burger, a vegan option featuring a puff rice patty and a plant based burger with a Love Bud patty.

Sides are simple – fries, thick chips and fried onion rings.

Betty also has a sweet tooth and has recently added her own icecream to the menu.

The frozen treat features custard icecream mixed with Betty’s favourite recipes and flavours include lamington, rich brownie and coconut velvet.

Up to 50 staff have been waiting since October 2021 for the chance to flip burgers in Main Street.

“We were planning to open in November but, like everyone, there were delays getting materials for the build and the permits took longer than expected,” Mr McQuilkin said.

The business managed to hold on to all staff hired for the new venue by offering them shifts at outlets in Chadstone and Southland.

“They’re been really loyal and are so excited to finally be able to serve customers here in Mornington.”

Many of the team are from local schools including Peninsula Grammar, Balcombe Grammar and Toorak College.

Mr McQuilkin said those wanting to pursue a career in the industry could join Betty’s Academy and complete a certificate 3 in hospitality.

Betty’s Burgers is at 5 Main Street, Mornington and opens 11am-9pm Monday to Thursday and Sunday with an 10pm close on Fridays and Saturdays.

The restaurant will celebrate its opening with a gala day on Sunday.
