It’s the little things that help Maddi Ellery stand out in the highly competitive hairdressing industry.
“I try really hard to listen to my clients and understand what the look they want,” Ms Ellery said.
“I also like to remember the little things, like the sort of tea they like to drink.”
The Somerville woman has just been named the Mornington Peninsula’s best hairdresser by Leader readers.
She has been working at Salon Envy in Mornington for about two and half years.
“Before that I was at a another salon for about 10 years,” she said.
“My former salon had an older clientele and I have developed a good way of working with a slightly older age group.”
Ms Ellery said she focused on providing a full range of services.
“I don’t have one area that I prefer over another. I’m passionate about cut, colour and style,” she said.
“My goal is to make sure every person leaves feeling great about themselves.”
Sharing her skills with those less fortunate was also a priority.
In 2019 she spent two weeks in Cambodia volunteering for Hair Aid.
The program involves teams visiting the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia to work with people living on the street, in slum communities and women rescued from the sex trade and prostitution gangs.
It aims to teach women basic hairdressing skills that can be used to start a microbusiness to support them and their families.
“It really opened my eyes. I learnt so much about the world and myself and left feeling so grateful for the life I am able to lead in Australia,” she said.
Ms Ellery was not the only Salon Envy hairdresser to poll well in the votes.
Her colleague Alex Smith received the second highest number of votes.
