A good pie is the hallmark of a quality bakery.
At Banjo’s Bakery and Cafe the staple has been elevated to cult status thanks to some innovative suggestions by customers.
The Mornington business introduces a limited edition pie each year and invites locals to guess the flavour.
Matt Sly, who took on the Main Street business in 2018, said the competition had delivered some unusual guesses such as the double cheeseburger and chicken parmi pies.
“They were great ideas that later became pies,” he said.
This year the promotion comes with a mouth watering prize.
“The customer who comes up with the flavour we choose for our special pie this year will be named our Pie Minister,” Mr Sly said.
“The honour comes with free pies for a year.”
Giving customers a unique experience helped ensure the longevity of the business, which first opened in the town in 2004.
It has also helped the bakery earn the title of the Mornington Peninusla’s best, after a reader vote as part of the Delicious Local campaign championed by Matt Preston.
Mr Sly said the businesses valued great service and quality products.
“We have a great range of artisan breads and our sweet options are also popular,” he said.
The house made raspberry cake with a custard filled base was a sweet signature that kept locals coming back, he said.
“The blueberry version is pretty good too.”
The new pie flavour will be announced on Monday.
Banjo’s Bakery Cafe is at 2-3, 96 Main Street, Mornington.
