A Cranbourne West man who allegedly stabbed an on-duty cop who was answering a false call for aggravated burglary has been placed on mental health treatment order.

Moses Thurairajasingam, 18, was set to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on November 22, facing charges including assaulting an emergency worker, intentionally causing serious injury and common law assault.

However, he was unable to appear, as the court heard Mr Thurairajasingam was being held as an inpatient on a mental health treatment order, where he was being assessed by a forensic psychologist.

This comes after Mr Thurairajasingam was refused bail in September, where Magistrate Stephen Ballek said the alleged offending was “very serious”.

“Not only the stabbing itself, but the actions of the accused were calculated and planned,” he said.

Police allege Mr Thurairajasingam made a false report to 000 on September 3, claiming he had been the victim of an aggravated burglary and had been assaulted during the incident.

Police officers arrived at the property “believing they were approaching someone who needed their help”, the court heard.

In shocking CCTV footage and body worn camera footage shown to the court in September, police approached Mr Thurairajasingam asking if he had been the person who called police.

Mr Thurairajasingam didn’t respond, and allegedly lunged at one of the attending officers using a 13cm kitchen knife he had concealed behind his back.

Police allege Mr Thurairajasingam stabbed the officer in the thigh, leaving him in hospital and in need of surgery.

After the officer retreated, Mr Thurairajasingam was stopped and told to drop the knife by another officer.

Police allege Mr Thurairajasingam then told the police to “shoot him” three times.

He allegedly said he “wanted to be shot so he could go to heaven” during the arrest.

The teenager had been previously diagnosed with schizophrenia and depression and had been medicated since a seven-week stint in hospital in 2021.

On Friday, Magistrate Belinda Wallington adjourned the matter to next year, to give the forensic psychologist more time to compile their report.

Mr Thurairajasingam will return to the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on January 23.
