A tattoo-faced thug who punched a nurse in the face because he had an adverse reaction to hospital medication has been let off with a fine.

Alan Locker bashed the Dandenong Hospital worker and smashed a staff printer after he lost the plot following a liver complaint.

The French Island 54-year-old pleaded guilty to unlawful assault and criminal damage charges at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

The court heard in July 2019 Locker was having treatment for liver issues at Dandenong Hospital when he suddenly turned angry.

He began ranting about “knives on the ward” and ran down a hall way yelling and screaming.

A nurse followed him to try and calm him down, but Locker didn’t like that and lashed out.

He lunched at the nurse and punched her in the face, causing a nose bleed, split lip and teeth and gum pain.

He then picked up a printer and smashed it on the ground before security guards restrained him and he was sedated.

When he was later interviewed at Hastings police station he said he couldn’t recall the attack and it must have been a medication side effect that caused him to lose his cool.

Locker, who is well-known in the small island community and sang the anthem at their recent Anzac Day ceremony, has a history of violent offending.

He had already been given another good behaviour bond for another assault.

In 2013 he was breaking up a bar fight and inadvertently stood on someone’s ankle, causing them an injury.

He also has other assault-related priors, but details of those were not read out in court.

Locker’s defence lawyer said her client was a respected French Island face and tendered character references in support of his good work in the community.

She said the unemployed masonry worker was extremely remorseful for his actions and had written a letter of apology to the nurse.

She said he was “extremely embarrassed” and “horrified” by what he had done.

Magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg said members of his community may well be shocked he had such a violent past.

“This was a serious assault on someone who was trying to help you,” Mr Rozencwajg said.

“They (nurses) put themselves on the line.

“But I accept this was not characteristic of your normal behaviour.”

Locker was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond with conditions that he do an anger management course and pay $500 to the court fund.
