A frightened Melbourne couple, including a young woman expecting her second child, have been left feeling unsafe in their own home after an unknown man turned off the power and then fired a gun into their front door after being confronted.

Police fear it was a targeted attack, although they don’t know if it’s the family or the house that is the centre of the unwanted attention.

Detective Acting Sergeant Matt McKenzie said authorities believed the man was unknown to the victims.

“We’re treating this as a targeted incident on this family, or at least the address... whether it’s mistaken identity or not,’’ Acting Sgt McKenzie said.

“The family has had no ongoing issues leading up to the incident that would lead to something like this taking place... the information that we‘ve been provided is that this person is unknown to them.”

The incident happened at 9.20pm on December 21 in Rosanna in Melbourne’s north east.

The man, who was captured prowling around the property on CCTV, turned the power off at the Interlaken property, before the homeowner — whose pregnant wife, young daughter and mother-in-law were in the house at the time — went outside and confronted the offender.

The offender then fired the gun twice, hitting the house’s front door and narrowly missing the victim.

It is believed the same man attended the property the previous day and turned off the power about 9.20pm on December 20, but no one was inside the home at the time.

Acting Sgt McKenzie said the offender’s ploy of turning off the home’s power was aimed to lure a victim outside.

“The most disturbing and concerning action about the incident leading up to the shooting itself is that the offender has clearly turned the power off in an attempt to move an occupant or occupants outside to be able to fire those rounds at that person,” he said.

Police believe the offender had planned out the shooting, down to wearing a high-vis vest in order to look like an energy company employee reading the power meter.

“I think any of the actions by that particular offender were pre-planned, I don't think anything was by chance... the hi-vis may have been to throw people off,” Acting Sgt McKenzie said.

Masha, who is pregnant with her second child, said she no longer felt safe in her own home.

“Every night and every day I’m just thinking maybe someone is coming back, even when I’m going outside or when I’m driving, I feel someone behind me,” she said.

She said her family had no idea who the mystery shooter targeting their home could be, as they had no conflicts with anyone.

“I‘m a normal person, I’m working, I’m helping the community, I don’t have any problem with anyone, the same with my husband,” she said.

Police and the victims are appealing to the public for any information on the identity of the man or circumstances around the incident.

Police have released CCTV and images of a man they believed can assist in their investigations. He was wearing a wearing a hi-vis jacket, glasses and a hat at the time.

Police have assured residents there is no cause for concern about attacks to other homes in the area.

“We’re working on the theory that it’s targeted towards his family... (but) we would just encourage the community to be vigilant and just cautious in their surroundings,” Sgt McKenzie said.

“We don’t think there’s any direct safety impact to the community.”
