Queen’s Birthday 2021: Melburnians and community identities honoured

A former police boss and two local government trailblazers have been recognised for their work.

Community identities who have excelled in health, emergency services and local government are among the Melburnians who have been honoured in this year’s Queens Birthday Honours.

Former Victoria Police chief commissioner Christine Nixon was made an Officer of the order of Australia (AO) for service to law enforcement, women in policing, and to tertiary education.

Ms Nixon served as chief commissioner from 2001-2009 and also chaired Victoria’s Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires.

Two women were also honoured as members of the Order of Australia for their significant service to local government and state parliament.

Former Boroondara mayor Coral Ross was recognised for her significant service to local government and gender equality, while former state parliament whip and one-time Brunswick Mayor and Moreland councillor Glennys Romanes received her honour for services to parliament and the community.

Former Victorian Racing Club chairman Rod Fitzroy was also made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his services to the horse racing industry and property.

Mr Fitzroy chaired the club from 2003-2011 operated his commercial real estate firm Fitzroys, and has also been heavily involved with the Epworth Hospital and its foundation.

Port Melbourne’s David Shaw received an Medal of the Order of Australia for his services to community health and Australian rules football.

Mr Shaw was the founding director of the Australian Prostate Centre, a role he’s kept since 2011.

He was also president of the Essendon Football Club from 1993-1996, and commissioner for the AFL from 1997-2000.

A total of 947 recipients received awards in the General Division of the Order of Australia across the country.
