Yarra Ranges storm: Fernshaw fatality, man dies in Belgrave

A man and a woman have died after trees fell on their cars in Melbourne’s outer east. The man became trapped when his car was crushed in Belgrave, while the woman was a passenger in a ute struck while travelling through the Black Spur.

Two people have died in Melbourne’s outer east during Thursday evening’s wild weather.

A Tecoma man, 59, died after a tree fell and crushed his car on the corner of Terrys Avenue and Ena Rd just after 6pm as wild winds tore through Melbourne.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said investigators were told the man’s car was leaving a shopping centre carpark when the tree fell, trapping the man.

A woman was killed after a tree fell on a ute as it was travelling along the Black Spur, at Fernshaw, about 6.50pm.

The Parkdale woman, 36, a front passenger in the ute, died at the scene.

The driver, a 24-year-old Flinders man, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Lilydale SES volunteers and police were called out to the incident had trouble getting to the scene because of debris from the storm.

The SES received thousands of calls for help with Lilydale and Emerald the most impacted units.

Lilydale SES controller Shaun Caulfield said their system had crashed after having more than 100 call outs this evening.

Mr Caulfield said on Thursday night there had been reports of trees onto buildings and roads.

“There is a crew on their way to Healesville for a tree on a car,” Mr Caulfield said.

“We’re having trouble getting there because there are trees across the roads on the way there.”

Thousands across the state were without power as wild weather rips across the state, plunging multiple Melbourne suburbs into darkness.

A four-year-old boy on Thursday night died in hospital after being hit by a falling tree in Blackburn South.
