After a summer of death and destruction caused by bushfires, the CFA is announcing the end of the Fire Danger Period for another year.

Authorities are lifting the safety restrictions in District 13 – Yarra Ranges, Knox, Maroondah and Manningham – from 1am on Tuesday, March 10.

Coldstream CFA captain Sean Bethell said there had been a lot of rain, which had kept grassland really green.

Mr Bethell said recent rain most likely made sure forest undergrowth was moist, otherwise the ban would not have been lifted.

He said the summer season had been quiet around District 13 with only a couple of grassfires in Healesville and Yarra Glen, which were quickly extinguished.

“If you’re going to burn off stay with the fire to make sure it’s safe,” Mr Bethell said.

“Still make sure it’s clear around the area and it won’t escape your property.”

Yarra Ranges Mayor Richard Higgins said it was important residents in bushland and rural areas — who were permitted to burn-off — checked conditions before lighting up and notified authorities.

“The Fire Danger Period’s beginning and end is declared by the CFA, using local information about moisture levels and fire risk,” Cr Higgins said.

“But even when the danger period is ending, residents still need to be very conscious of burning off and how to do so safely.”

He said anyone burning off after the danger period had finished must check the rules on their council’s website.

“Landowners can register their burn-off with the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority by calling 1800 668 511 or emailing burnoffs@esta.vic.gov.au,” Cr Higgins said.

“If you’re looking to dispose of excess vegetation, other than burning off, residents can access council’s green waste bins, or dispose of green waste at their local waste transfer station for a fee.”
