A MUTILATED donkey has been found dead, with its back legs ripped off, only hours after it was born in Wandin North.
The six-hour-old foal was found by a caretaker at Glenbrae Equestrian Centre on Victoria Rd about 5.30pm on Friday, August 25.
Lilydale police Sergeant Ryan Wheeler said police believed the foal’s mutilation was caused by an animal attack.
But the foal’s devastated owner Haydi Kubrak believed it was stolen from her Bailey Grove property shortly after it was born.
Ms Kubrak, who is a pet nanny in the Yarra Ranges and also owns and runs Shanessy Grove Irish Donkeys and Ponies For Hire, said she had been waiting for her donkey, May, to give birth but didn’t know the foal had been born.
She believed someone stole the foal shortly after May had given birth.
“We think it was stolen about 2.30pm, maybe someone came to pat the donkey or whatever and has seized the opportunity,” Ms Kubrak said.
Ms Kubrak said her property was hidden and believed the theft was opportunistic.
She said a witness described seeing a black 4WD similar to a Ford Discovery with a partial registration plate TC2 about 2.30pm that day.
Sgt Wheeler said police were concerned about the incident and the effect it had on the people who found the foal.
Sgt Wheeler said anyone with information should phone Lilydale police on 9729 2300 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
