Golfers have flocked back to a Yarra Valley golf course after coronavirus restrictions were eased today.

Yering Meadows Members Association president Trevor Mair said the club had received many requests to play on the course, and apart from a few gaps on Thursday and Friday were booked out this week.

“The reopening is going quite well,” he said.

Mr Mair said he expected golf to grow in popularity following the lockdown period and the club was receiving phone calls from potential new members.

“Golfers are strange people, they have to get out there,” he said.

“For me I went and practised in a paddock just to hit some golf balls.

“I think there is going to be a renewed interest.

“There are people who played casually who may be looking at getting a better structure, more permanent times and I’m sure that’s why we’re getting some of the phone calls.”

Mr Mair said he felt for the owners of the golf club, who had no income from the club during the lockdown period. but still had bills coming in.

“It’s a godsend to get everybody back and we hope to start competition probably from the middle of next week and in that way the golf club will start to get at least some income,” he said.

“Then depending on other restrictions being lifted the cafe and restaurant part will hopefully be able to open in the next fortnight or three weeks.

“But at this stage its roll up, go to the pro shop, get your tee time, meet your mates on the tee, play golf and get in the car and go home.”

Mr Mair said Yering Meadows welcomed new members and had a variety of memberships to suit everyone.
