A COUPLE of good Samaritans are helping to fill empty tummies by opening a food hub in Lilydale for people who have fallen on tough times.
Jim and Christine Roche have started The Basement Food Hub to help out people from the area who struggling to afford to feed their families.
Every Wednesday, the space below the Subway store in Main St is open from 9am to 1pm for people to come and shop like they would in a supermarket, but for free.
The Roches also run a breakfast club at Lilydale West Primary School where they feed up to 60 children on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8.30am to help fuel them for the rest of their day.
Mr Roche said it had taken the pair about six months to organise the space but it had already helped two families who had children with disabilities.
He said fresh food including vegetables, fruit and bread was sourced from across the Yarra Ranges.
The couple also sits on the board of Sydney-based charity Faith in Action, which supplies the hub with non-perishable items including cereal and juice.
The Food Hub is backed by Turning Point Church which has sites in Lilydale and Cranbourne.
Access to the hub is through a gate next to Subway on Maroondah Highway in Lilydale.
