A YARRA Ranges man has captured an epic battle between a spider and a scorpion unfold in a web in his bathroom.
Tim Hurley, of Kalorama, witnessed the tiny spider, about the size of a 10 cent coin, attack its 3cm prey, exoskeleton and all, which it had neatly snared in its web.
Mr Hurley said he noticed the oddity when he was going to the bathroom before bed.
“I don’t know what kind of spider but it looks like a daddy long legs,” he said.
“The scorpion was bigger than the spider.”
Mr Hurley said he saw the spider attacking the scorpion.
“The next morning it was still kicking,” he said.
“I know redbacks set web traps and anchor them in the ground for their prey. When something walks past it springs up and captures it.”
Sadly the scorpion met its end, but the spider enjoyed lunch.
Mr Hurley said it wasn’t the first scorpion he had seen at his home.
“I killed one, but saw another and put it outside because I thought, I can’t keep killing them,” he said.
“The biggest one I saw was under the green waste bin.”
According to Museums Victoria, Australia has about 80 species of scorpion, while Victoria has nine — but none are deadly to humans.
The website says while the Australian scorpions can inflict a painful sting that causes swelling, none have caused deaths.
But anyone stung by a scorpion is advised to seek medical advice.
