After serving his country in Vietnam, Simon Bloomer has spent 25 years working to support ex-serviceman who aren’t doing as well as he is.
The 72-year-old Boronia man is an integral member of Carry On Victoria’s Dandenong branch and also helps to run the Dandenong/Cranbourne RSL sub-branch.
He’s being honoured with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) this Australia Day for his long standing service to veterans and their families.
“Many (ex-serviceman) get on with their lives and have no real problems, but there are also many who don’t,” Mr Bloomer said.
The veteran said he was really happy to receive the award because it meant recognition for the important work done by Carry On Victoria, an organisation dedicated to providing welfare assistance to the ex-service community.
He joined its Dandenong branch back in 1994, where his brother — also a veteran — was a member.
Mr Bloomer said the branch was mainly made up of World War II veterans and was in search of younger members to carry on its work.
Having formerly worked as a bank teller, he has been its honorary treasurer at the organisation ever since.
He’s also the director of welfare and served as president for four years.
Mr Bloomer said the organisation was all about looking after veterans and their families, offering low-cost housing and welfare assistance.
