A drugged-up and armed Mongols bikie rammed a police car and other parked vehicles during a dramatic bungled escape attempt in Balaclava.
Sam Chamoun, 43, appeared in the County Court for sentencing on Wednesday after pleading guilty last month to charges including unauthorised possession of firearms, possession of an imitation firearm, theft and careless driving.
He was jailed for three years with a minimum non parole of two years and two months.
Judge David Sexton said Chamoun stole a Nissan Patrol from Windsor on February 9, 2023 and a boat and its trailer from a Port Melbourne multi-level carpark a few days later.
On February 27, a witness contacted police after he saw Chamoun and a woman park the Nissan with the boat attached in Balaclava.
Judge Sexton said Chamoun drove to the end of the street and was stationary when police arrived before he tried to move around the police car in an attempt to escape.
He hit the police car and a number of other parked cars, continued down the street at a “considerable speed” before losing control of the vehicle.
The boat was dislodged from the trailer and collided with another parked car, while the Nissan Patrol lost a wheel.
Chamoun allegedly kept driving before dumping the car in Raven Grove and attempted to flee in an Uber.
The Uber was stopped by police and Chamoun was arrested. He was found in possession of two satchel bags containing a silver handgun, an inoperable antique, sawn off shotgun and two zip-lock bags holding loose ammunition.
In the Nissan Patrol, police found a black and white Moet Chandon bag containing a crow bar, a screwdriver, pliers, a black handled knife in a sheath, a hammer, a large mallet and additional tools.
“The fact that in your heavily drug affected state you then had in your possession a loaded pistol, a shotgun and a gel blaster constitutes serious and highly concerning conduct from a public safety perspective,” Judge Sexton said.
“The presence of loose ammunition only increases the concerning nature of your conduct.”
Between 1997 and 2022, Judge Sexton said Chamoun served a string of jail terms totalling 15 years and had 167 priors for deception, fraud, burglary, theft, and theft of motor vehicles and trailers.
Another term of imprisonment was warranted given the serious and concerning nature of Chamoun’s offending, he said.
