A man remains on the run after he broke into a Ringwood home, stole jewellery and poured petrol inside.

Maroondah detective Sergeant Paul Cosgrove said the incident took place about 10pm on December 6, when a man in his 30s returned to his home on Tamar St.

Sgt Cosgrove said the resident interrupted an intruder inside his home and the duo had a small confrontation, before the intruder ran from the scene.

The resident then alerted neighbours for assistance, and they searched the house and found several pieces of jewellery had been stolen.

Sgt Cosgrove said it was then discovered up to 80 litres of petrol had been poured throughout the house, and police were called to investigate.

There was no evidence of an attempt to set the house on fire.

Sgt Cosgrove said police had no detailed description of the man involved in the incident due to poor night-time visibility, and were appealing for witnesses to come forward.
