A woman has been rushed to hospital after she was hit by a car while waiting to cast her vote at a pre-polling centre in Ringwood East.

The incident took place around 1pm while an 89-year-old woman was attempting to park in the front car park of the former Maroondah Sports Club.

It is believed the woman had her car, a light blue Ford Focus Sedan, in reverse and accidentally hit the accelerator, ploughing into a 43-year-old woman and 38-year-old man in the queue.

The car also narrowly missed local Deakin federal Liberal MP Michael Sukkar who was standing near the entrance at the end of the campaigners queue.

Mr Sukkar, Labor candidate Matt Gregg and other bystanders had to help lift the car off the woman, who was trapped underneath.

Off duty nurses and a doctor waiting in the pre-poll line also rushed to the woman’s aid.

The woman was taken to The Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition with minor injuries, while the man brushed himself off and didn’t require treatment.

The 89-year-old woman was taken to Maroondah Hospital for observation and will undergo a driver’s license review.

Police blocked off entry to the carpark and traffic was still heavily banked back along Mt Dandenong Rd at 3pm.
