Premier Cricket: Ashley Chandrasinghe speaks on his new technical adjustment

Victorian rising star Ashley Chandrasinghe has opened up on the changes in his game which have played a key role in his fast start.

Following his first season in the state system, Ashley Chandrasinghe and the Victorian coaches made an adjustment to his technique.

It was only a minor tweak but the left-hander feels it’s allowing him to access more shots.

He admits there’s more work to do to “unwind” his old approach but feels Saturday’s century, 113 against Kingston Hawthorn, is proof of the hard work paying off.

“I have worked pretty hard on the technical change the coaches at Victoria have helped me with,” he said.

“I have been mainly working on that to help my access to the ball, so I can have access different shots.

“I feel like that’s paying off, I feel like I have certainly improved from where I was, probably more than the technical perspective, mental and tactically as well.

“Looking at some of the guys from the squad and how they go about their batting, it rubs off on the other guys like me who are watching.

“We’re constantly improving and evolving as players, I definitely feel like I have gotten better, hopefully I can translate that into some scores.

“I had trouble with it last year and I was doing it quite a bit, so it was hard to unwind that habit, it’s still probably there but I am certainly a little bit better.”

Chandrasinghe, 22 next month, made a century on debut for Victoria before carrying his bat in a divisive Sheffield Shield final innings.

He has played the first four matches of the Premier Cricket season for Casey South Melbourne where, according to Chandrasinghe, he has “found ways to get out”.

Despite scoring his third Premier Cricket ton in his 51st First XI match, he left the field wanting more.

“I was very pleased to get a hundred, especially on the occasion – playing at Casey with the new rooms – but I was a little bit frustrated, there was a bit of time left,” he said.

“We had the momentum and me and Harrish (Kannan) were progressing along, so it wasn’t a good time to get out.

“Wally (Michael Wallace) batted really well and kept the momentum going.

“It didn’t hurt too much but it was annoying to not bat on.”

Having missed the first four matches of the Shield season, Chandrasinghe is itching to get back into Victorian colours but he understands more runs are his ticket back in.

“I would love to play for Victoria again soon but the guys we have at the top of the order are pretty well deserving of their spots,” he said.

“I have to work hard to get back into the squad and that team.

“I have to just keep scoring runs, that’s the only way you can get back into it.”

Courtesy of a 18-run partnership between Chandrasinghe and Harrish Kannan (124 not out), as well as a quick-fire 50 from Michael Wallace, the Swans are 2-301 overnight.
