A popular Chirnside Park restaurant has shut its doors after 12 years.

Hundreds of Yarra Ranges residents have expressed their sadness online at news Platinum Restaurant in East Ridge Drive off Maroondah Highway has closed, with one describing the news as “heartbreaking”.

The modern Australian restaurant was a popular spot for birthdays, milestone celebrations and catch ups.

“We would like to thank all our loyal customers for the support and patronage over the past 12 years,” the restaurant owners posted online.

“Platinum Restaurant is now permanently closed.

“This difficult decision was made in light of the pending ‘change of use’ of the restaurant precinct at East Ridge Drive.

“It has been a privilege to get to know, connect and engage with the local community.

“We are greatly going to miss everyone, new and old customers/friends alike.”

It is another blow to the precinct following the closure of The Precinct Bar and Zero95 last year.

Yarra Ranges Council has received a planning application to change the use of 1 East Ridge Drive from a restaurant to a childcare centre.

According to documents lodged with the council, the proposal seeks to use the existing building at East Ridge Drive as a childcare centre, while retaining Platinum Café.

The childcare centre is proposed to accommodate a maximum of 88 children at any one time, operating from 6.30am to 6.30pm.

The proposed centre will provide a service “essential” to an area with a growing population, according to the planning documents.
