Horrified community members have gathered to protest a planned kangaroo cull at Heritage Golf & Country Club in Chirnside Park, with the dead roos allegedly set to be turned into pet food.
In a post shared widely on social media, a letter to nearby property owners outlined a plan to engage a licenced contractor to conduct a cull at the Chirnside Park complex on Tuesday, April 27 from 9pm to 3am.
“It is therefore in your best interests not to be out after dark while shooting is taking place during these times,” it read.
Although some community members reported hearing gun shots in the area Tuesday night, the cull didn’t go ahead.
Alyssa Wormald is part of the Save the Kinley Kangas group, fighting to save a landlocked mob of kangaroos in Lilydale from being killed.
“When we heard the (Chirnside Park) mob was facing the same fate, we all just wanted to do whatever we could to try and prevent the cull,” she said.
Ms Wormald joined a protest at the Chirnside Park site on Tuesday night.
“For me and so many other people, and there has been such a community outcry, we really do value the lives of kangaroos and value them as sentient, intelligent, unique creatures who have really amazing family bonds, especially between mothers and joeys and between siblings,” she said.
“And we have such a strong belief they deserve to live in peace and don’t deserve to go through the stress and trauma of these awful culls.”
Ms Wormald said locals were distraught to hear the kangaroos killed in the cull would allegedly be used in pet food.
“Gentle giant” Big Al is among the roos at risk by a cull.
He was rescued from the site by Five Freedoms Animal Rescue due to a hand injury and was cared for at Trentham East Wildlife Shelter during December 2020 and January 2021 before being returned home.
