A member of Croydon’s Chin community who attacked a man with an empty Corona bottle at a gridiron match has been told to clean up his act or to expect more time behind bars.

Nun Ceu, 20, walked free from jail on Thursday after he was sentenced in the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court for his role in an incident at a Croydon Ranges gridiron match on March 12.

The court heard Ceu had come down to watch a friend play, when he and an offsider then got involved in a dispute with another man.

The man attempted to run away, but was chased down, and was then hit in the face by a glass beer bottle thrown by Ceu, who was also armed with a screwdriver.

Ceu then punched and kicked the man before he and his offsider ran off.

Ceu was later spotted in Eastfield Park just after midnight on March 13 and arrested by police.

The court heard Ceu’s victim had to be taken to Maroondah Hospital to be treated for face wounds and a minor head injury.

Ceu pleaded guilty to affray before Thursday’s sentencing and had spent 52 days in custody as pre-detention.

When asked by Magistrate Anthony Parsons what led to his behaviour, Ceu said he was “unmedicated and felt bad seeing an old guy getting bashed”.

He said upon reflection, he needed to “stop going out” and “change his ways”.

Mr Parsons sentenced Ceu to one month’s imprisonment, including his 52 days of pre-detention, clearing the way for him to be released immediately.

But he implored Ceu to work closely with his support workers to alter his behaviour.

“Your future in the community depends on you addressing the problems that keep putting you in custody,” he said.

“You have strength, intelligence and capacity but you’ve gotta deal with these problems or you will spend a lot of your younger years behind bars.”
