Tributes are flowing for Mooroolbark couple William ‘Bill’ Williams and his wife Marion after the pair were killed in a horror smash in Montrose.

Major collisions unit detectives are investigating after a truck collided with a car on Canterbury Rd about 3.45pm on October 19.

Mrs Williams, 69, who was a passenger in the car, died at the scene.

Mr Williams, who was driving the couple’s silver sedan, 72, was flown to hospital but later died.

The horrific smash comes amid calls for the speed limit along the major arterial to be reduced.

Detective Senior Constable Rikilee Mitchell said investigators were appealing for anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers.

The driver of the truck is helping police with their inquiries.

Leader believes the couple’s small white dog was in the car at the time of the crash and has been found after witnesses saw the frightened pet jump from a smashed window and ran down Canterbury Rd towards Kilsyth.

Emergency services were called to the grim scene after the accident, which also involved two other cars.

Bystanders reported the car smashed into a tree on the median strip near Stradbroke Rd.

Mount Dandenong Tourist Rd, between the Montrose roundabout and Canterbury Rd is closed westbound.

Leader has been told there are skid marks and damage to several cars and a Yarra Valley Water truck.

Nearby resident Rito Bettiol told Leader he was mowing the lawn when he heard the crash and came out to see what happened.

Mr Bettiol said he saw emergency workers performing CPR on an elderly woman.

He said an elderly man who was in the same car had been taken away in an ambulance.

Mr Bettiol said the couple had a small, white fluffy dog in the car with them, which jumped out of a broken window and fled the scene.

“It’s a racetrack here. Everyday after 4pm it becomes a racetrack,” he said.

“They drive along here sometimes at 100km/h and it’s an 80 zone. They need to drop speed to 60km/h and put in speed cameras.”

“They’ve got to do something about it, it’s just too dangerous.”

CFA firefighters, police and ambulance are all on scene.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said paramedics were called to a crash in Montrose at 3.50pm.

They said paramedics were assessing a man at the scene for suspected upper body injuries.

“The air ambulance helicopter has been dispatched to this case,” the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, a witness told Leader he heard the smash and rushed outside.

“This is what we saw,” he said.

Another person overheard a police officer tell an onlooker to take their child and leave the scene because “they don’t need to be seeing this”.

While another witness said the car looks like it has been pulverised.
