A scorned lover threatened to rape and murder his ex during a terrifying campaign of abusive text messaging.
The 20-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty at the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on June 4 to a raft of charges including intervention order breaches and driving offences.
Leading Senior Constable Lisa Stillman told the court the man was in a three-month relationship with the woman which ended in early January.
The woman was granted an intervention order by the court after she became frightened of his behaviour, Leading Sen-Constable Stillman told the court, but when he continued to fill her inbox with abusive messages and threatened self-harm she reported the breaches to police.
Police called him in for an interview on May 14, but while en route to the station the man sent his ex a series of further terrifying texts berating her for dobbing him in and accusing her of cheating on him, Leading Sen-Constable Stillman told the court.
He threatened to rape and murder his ex and chillingly told her she wouldn’t be able to “snitch” on him again once he was “done” with her.
The text was followed by four kiss face emojis, Leading Sen-Constable Stillman told the court, and about 100 texts were sent in breach of the intervention order.
One of the texts read: “Little lagging snitch, I’ve got a lot planned for you,”
The man’s lawyer told the court her client’s youth and stable home life with his family meant he had good prospects for rehabilitation.
A psychological report noted he had a level of “immaturity” and mental health issues that needed to be addressed, and she told the court he’d spent 19 days in jail so far.
Magistrate Jan Maclean said the man’s offending was “deeply concerning”.
She said he had a history of similar criminal offending, though she noted it was limited.
“(He) seems to have become very fixated in it (the relationship) ending,” Ms Maclean said.
“This is serious offending and it requires a period of imprisonment, of that there is no doubt.”
The matter is due back at court on June 16 for sentencing.
