A mechanic driving along a busy road in Rowville hit a pedestrian causing him to be flung 20m across the road as he tried to dodge traffic.

Attila Rudolf, 34, appeared before the Ringwood Magistrates Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to careless driving.

Rudolf was driving on Stud Rd when he slid into the left lane — which was about to change to a bus lane — to avoid traffic at 5.30pm on May 15, 2022.

The other lanes were at a standstill when a pedestrian went to illegally cross the road from the median strip.

Rudolf hit the pedestrian causing the man to be flung 20m along the road.

The pedestrian sustained life-threatening injuries including shattering the bones in his left leg, fracturing his back, multiple other fractures and a brain injury.

The victim, who spent five months in hospital after the accident, said he was still waiting for further surgeries and could not walk properly.

“I could not dance with my son at his wedding,” the victim impact statement read.

“This completely changed my life.”

Magistrate Hayley Bate sentenced Rudolf to a 12-month good behaviour bond and a $2000 fine.

He will also have to take a behavioural change course and his license was suspended.
