MYSTERY surrounds a series of loud bangs in Croydon on the weekend that sparked community concern and led to an investigation by police and fire crews.

Emergency Services Victoria posted an alert for a suspected structure fire in Moore Ave about 11.30pm on Saturday and eight Croydon residents phoned 000 in relation to the loud noises.

Concerned residents flooded local Facebook noticeboards with comments about 11.30pm, with some reporting they heard the noises as far away as the Yarra Ranges.

Many suspected the noises were fireworks, including Carolyn Dekort, who lives on Mount View Parade.

She said she ran outside after hearing the first bang.

She told Leader she then saw a large firework to the west “similar to those seen at festivals, going off in the sky”.

“It is my guess that it was set alight from either Adams Reserve or Silcock Reserve,” she said.

Alexandra Rotermund said she and a friend were in Landale Ave, Croydon and heard a “colossal” explosion, then “a slightly lesser explosion” coming from the same source close to them.

”It... couldn’t have been more than around three blocks away,” Ms Rotermund said.

“Within eight minutes we heard emergency services heading east along Mount Dandenong Rd, which included fire engines.

“It was quite serious, explosive sounds that sent the darling corellas flying off and squawking.”

Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokeswoman Zoe Keightley said three MFB crews responded but found no evidence of a fire.

“A thorough investigation of the area by MFB and Victoria Police personnel found no sign of any sign of fire, anything suspicious, or anything that would point to an explosion,” she said.

Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Lana Wilson said paramedics were called to a Croydon address but no one was treated.

Croydon police and Maroondah crime investigation unit officers did not have any details about the incident when asked by Leader.
