A man is in a critical condition at the Royal Melbourne Hospital after he was shot to the upper body in Lilydale during a police incident in a shopping centre carpark.

Sen-Constable Parson said officers tried to speak with the man who refused to drop his weapon.

“An air ambulance helicopter has been dispatched,” the spokeswoman said.

A 3AW listener told Neil Mitchell a man was walking around the shopping centre, near Chemist Warehouse, with “quite a large knife”.

The woman named Pauline said five police tried to diffuse the situation with “guns drawn.”

“He’s not waving the knife or anything, he’s just wandering,” Pauline said.

“They’re yelling at him to put the knife down but he doesn’t seem interested in that.”

Listeners could hear loud shots live on air.

“Oh my god here comes more police … oh sh*t, they’re shooting. They’ve just shot. I can’t see if they shot him but there’s just been three or four rounds.”

She said special operations police then surrounded and began securing the area.

Another caller, who did not see the shooting, told 3AW police had tried to calm a man who was holding a knife in the carpark of the shopping centre.

The male caller told 3AW the man was wearing a long sleeved top and rolled up left sleeve looked like he was going to cut himself.

“He was agitated and definitely not himself,” the man said.

“Police were very calm, collected, trying to talk to him to drop the knife and calm down. They weren’t aggressive.”

“I could hear him swearing. He wasn’t shouting, he was speaking in a loud voice.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or with dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
