SAFER streets could be on the way for five Yarra Ranges communities with a pledge from the Liberal Party to invest in CCTV cameras in the region if re-elected.
Casey federal Liberal MP Tony Smith promised $420,000 to install or upgrade cameras in Mooroolbark, Yarra Glen, Mt Evelyn, Woori Yallock and Monbulk.
Mr Smith said the money would be divided between relevant local community groups who would work in conjunction with the Lilydale Centre Safe Committee and Victoria Police to ensure the cameras were best placed to tackle crime and ensure the safety of the public.
“I have had many conversations with the residents and businesses in these communities about the need for CCTV security cameras to combat increased crime,” Mr Smith said.
“Whether it’s theft, graffiti, assault or other serious incidents, the delivery of these cameras will ensure the police can respond quickly and have the evidence required to bring these offenders to justice.”
Mooroolbark Traders & Community Group president Geoff Earney said eight cameras would be upgraded in Mooroolbark if the cash came through.
“They make a big difference — every town that has (cameras) has a deterrent for thugs out there who without these cameras think they can run rampant,” Mr Earney said.
“This would be good for Mooroolbark and good for all the other communities involved.”
