Launching Place: Puppy and owner trapped down Yarra Ranges mineshaft rescued
An afternoon walk turned into a nightmare for a puppy and its owner after they became trapped 10m down a mineshaft in the Yarra Ranges.
Emergency service crews worked together to rescue a puppy and its owner who became trapped 10m below ground in an abandoned mineshaft in Launching Place.
The CFA was called to the scene on Parkinsons Rd about 2.25pm yesterday, with nine vehicles from Dandenong, Wandin, Hallam, Monbulk, Hoddles Creek and Little Yarra responding.
“The patient and 10-month-old puppy were located 10m below ground in an old mine shaft,” the CFA said in a statement.
“Crews conducted a joint agency high angle rescue operation alongside SES members using equipment from Hallam, Dandenong and Monbulk brigades.”
The incident was under control by 4.29pm and the patient and puppy were freed and handed over to Ambulance Victoria.
On its Facebook page Monbulk CFA said the dog had fallen into the abandoned mineshaft and owner was unable to get himself and the dog out.
It said a high angle rescue system was rigged using two trees and members from CFA and SES made the haul team.
An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said the man in his 40s was treated for hypothermia and taken to Maroondah Hospital in a stable condition — and the puppy was OK.
