A man has been rushed to hospital after a learner driver crashed a ute into a car before hitting a pole in Kilsyth.

Traffic is banking up inbound towards the scene where two tradie utes — one with a trailer — were involved in the incident, which happened just before 1.20pm on the Canterbury and Liverpool roads intersection.

Knox highway patrol Sergeant Andrew Sands said police believe a 28-year-old Woori Yallock driver — the learner — smashed into a white 4WD, which had been waiting to turn onto Canterbury Rd from Liverpool Rd near the United petrol station.

He said the supervising driver. a 32-year-old Croydon man, was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

The driver of the white 4WD was not injured.

Police have closed Liverpool Rd southbound lanes as firefighters, police and paramedics deal with the accident.

The passenger of the grey Ford ute, which has bent the pole on impact, has been rushed to hospital.

A second white 4WD was also involved in the accident.

Traffic remains backed up on Canterbury Rd heading towards the city.
