Hemi Thompson’s kung Fu fighting earns him no favours at court after shop theft and assault

A Bruce Lee wannabe who threatened to let loose on PSOs after they found him with stolen alcohol at Bayswater train station found his kung fu skills were no match for handcuffs and capsicum spray.

A wannabe martial arts expert threatened to bust a few moves on PSOs when they nabbed him for stealing booze from a bottle shop.

Hemi Thompson, 26, of Frankston North, revealed himself to be more adept in the art of bullshido than the ancient art of kung fu when he pleaded guilty at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on March 30 to theft and assaulting an emergency services worker.

Court documents described how Thompson entered the Bayswater Liquorland store about 5pm on December 27 and grabbed a $65 bottle of whisky from the shelf before leaving without paying.

Staff reported the incident to police and PSOs found Thompson at the nearby Bayswater railway train station a short time later, according to court documents.

Thompson took up an “aggressive stance” when approached by the PSOs and warned them “he knew self defence” and they “should be careful”, the documents noted.

He then shoved one of the PSOs and attempted to headbutt him, but he went down like a sack of potatoes when they deployed capsicum spray, according to the court documents.

In an interview at Knox police station after he recovered from the OC spray, Thompson told police he tended to do “dumb sh-t” when he was drunk.

And after watching a video of the attack Magistrate David Starvaggi told Thompson’s lawyer her client’s fighting skills more closely resembled drunk fu than kung fu.

“I could say flippantly he should get a refund on his self-defence lessons, but this is a very serious matter. It warrants jail,” Mr Starvaggi said.

Mr Starvaggi convicted Thompson, who was already in custody for other matters, and sentenced him to a week’s jail.
