A woman who threatened to bomb Maroondah Hospital and stab a nurse because of delays admitting her sister — who she feared was critically ill — has faced court.

Leah Twining, 28, of Croydon, pleaded guilty to threatening serious harm and threatening to cause property damage at the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on February 28.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Ernie Kersai told the court Twining visited the hospital’s emergency department on October 25 last year with her sister, who was believed to be suffering from stroke symptoms.

Sen-Constable Kersai told the court hospital staff faced delays while attempting to admit the woman’s sister, which caused Twining to fly into a rage and repeatedly threaten to “f-ing stab” a 59-year-old nurse with 40 years’ experience at the hospital.

He said Twining also told the woman she was “f-ing useless” at her job.

The court heard that when security were called, Twining shouted in front of onlookers in the emergency department, including children and the elderly, that she would return to bomb the hospital.

Sen-Constable Kersai told the court the nurse was so shaken by the incident, she feared walking to her car alone after her shift that evening.

He said when Twining was later interviewed by police she told them again she wanted to, “f-ing kill those c—”.

Twining’s lawyer told the court his client was anxious about her stepsister’s health at the time of the incident, and Twining was also receiving professional help for a personality disorder.

“She believed her sister was suffering stroke symptoms … something was going on with her ability to speak and breath,” Twining’s lawyer told the court.

“She lost her temper when she shouldn’t have because she thought her sister was going to die.”

Magistrate Daniel Muling said Twining’s behaviour was unacceptable but he acknowledged she was remorseful for her actions.

“I hope you can understand the impact that it has had on her, 40 years working in the area and suddenly someone like yourself becomes aggressive, angry and threatening,” he said.

Mr Muling convicted Twining and ordered she adhere to a two-year good behaviour bond.
