A TWO-STOREY childcare centre for 104 kids will be built in Croydon, despite the council rejecting the plans over concerns about the size of the building and the removal of trees.

A TWO-STOREY childcare centre for 104 kids will be built in Croydon, despite Maroondah Council rejecting the plans over concerns about building size and the removal of trees.

The council rejected the proposal for 358-360 Mount Dandenong Rd last October on the grounds it was too ambitious and intensive for the site.

It also raised concerns about the removal of trees on the properties.

But the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal overturned the council’s decision last month, allowing the project to go ahead.

VCAT member Graeme David found the development was appropriate in size and scale.

“On overall balance the proposal presents a reasonable outcome against the planning framework and the physical setting of the site,” he said.

There was considerable discussion about a 25m cypress pine tree on the boundary of the property, but Mr Graham said he was satisfied the tree could be protected.

“I am likewise satisfied that the other trees on the site can be managed appropriately, or replaced as needed,” he said.

The development will include a semi-basement carpark at the rear of the property, which will be built into a downward slope in the land.

The proposed operating hours for the centre are 6.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays.

In a statement, Maroondah Mayor Tony Dib said: “Council accepts that VCAT has a different view on the merits of the application and that they have directed the council to issue the permit with changes to the plans, which will provide for greater tree protection and retention.”
