Australians spend $11bn on illicit drugs

A Melbourne drug trafficker who peddled MDMA, ecstasy and meth has avoided a significant jail term party because he has a job.

Seamus Ryan, 27, was sentenced in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday to three months’ jail after pleading guilty to charges including trafficking a commercial quantity of MDMA.

However, Ryan walked free as he had already spent 163 days in custody.

Ryan was busted with various drugs including 129g of MDMA, 60g of meth, cocaine and ecstasy at his Clayton home in August last year.

Investigators visited Ryan’s home to serve a forensic identification result after the trafficker mailed eight packages containing a combined 1000 ecstasy pills.

The packages were intercepted in October 2019.

Joint Taskforce Icarus investigators conducted tests on the eight MDMA packages with each containing Ryan’s DNA.

Police were invited into the home by Ryan’s family members but the dealer was nowhere to be seen.

Prahran Divisional Response Unit members discovered the cocaine, meth and ecstasy in “plain sight” in Ryan’s bedroom.

Investigators suspected Ryan was “hiding” so they commenced the process to seek an arrest warrant.

But Ryan arrived home shortly after and was arrested.

The court was told Ryan made significant progress seeking drug rehabilitation and was now focused on spending time with his partner and stepchild.

Ryan, a father-to-be, is also back working, the court was told.

Magistrate Michael McNamara congratulated Ryan, who appeared off camera via a mobile phone, on his progress.

“You’re a person who has great prospects of rehabilitation,” Magistrate McNamara said.

“That is good news for you and the community … you’re doing all the smart things, working hard, getting a job, concentrating on your family.

“I feel some confidence you’re going to come good … the other side is there is huge concern in the community … about trafficking drugs … methamphetamine especially.

“I hope you have a good life.”

Ryan, who also pleaded guilty to trafficking ecstasy and meth, was convicted and handed a 12-month community correction order.
